- The star-formation history and IMF of the field population of the 30 Doradus super-association is determined using Wide Field Imager photometry. The cluster NGC 2070 and the OB association LH104 are also studied and used for comparison. The star-formation history of the 30~Doradus super-association appears to be characterized by a large increase in star-formation activity 10Myr to 20Myr ago. This seems to be the case across the whole eastern half of the LMC as demonstrated by the ages of stellar populations as far away as 30 Doradus and Shapley's Constellation III. Star-formation appears to be occurring at a constant rate in the field and in loose associations, and in bursts in the clusters. The field IMF is found to have almost the exact Salpeter slope in the range 7M_{sun}_<=M<=40M_{sun}_, at odds with previous claims. We find that, for objects with more complex star-formation histories, Be stars and selective incompleteness strongly affect the determination of the IMF for M>40M_{sun}_, naturally explaining the observed deviation of the high mass IMF slope from the Salpeter value.The present work supports the idea of a universal IMF.

- We present a study of the composition of gas and dust in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) using UV absorption spectroscopy. We measure PII and FeII along 84 spatially distributed sightlines toward the MCs using archival Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observations. For 16 of those sightlines, we also measure SiII, CrII, and ZnII from new Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations. We analyze these spectra using a new spectral line analysis technique based on a semi-parametric Voigt profile model. We have combined these measurements with HI and H_2_ column densities and reference stellar abundances from the literature to derive gas-phase abundances, depletions, and gas-to-dust ratios (GDRs). Of our 84 P and 16 Zn measurements, 80 and 13, respectively, are depleted by more than 0.1dex, suggesting that P and Zn abundances are not accurate metallicity indicators at and above the metallicity of the SMC. Si, Cr, and Fe are systematically less depleted in the SMC than in the Milky Way (MW) or LMC. The minimum Si depletion in the SMC is consistent with zero. We find GDR ranges of 190-565 in the LMC and 480-2100 in the SMC, which is broadly consistent with GDRs from the literature. These ranges represent actual location to location variation and are evidence of dust destruction and/or growth in the diffuse neutral phase of the interstellar medium. Where they overlap in metallicity, the gas-phase abundances of the MW, LMC, and SMC and damped Ly{alpha} systems evolve similarly with metallicity.

- An objective-prism survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has been performed through an H-{alpha} + [NII] interference filter, using the 90cm Curtis Schmidt telescope of Cerro Tololo. 1898 emission-line objects have been detected in the main body of this galaxy, almost quadrupling the number of those found in the same region by the previous objective-prism surveys. Among these objects are newly discovered planetary nebulae, compact HII regions and late-type stars. Continuum intensity, as well as the shape and relative strength of the H-{alpha} emission-line have been estimated; coordinates, cross-identifications for the listed objects are provided. The original paper contains in addition finding charts.

- We present an imaging analysis of four low mass stellar clusters (<~5000M_{sun}_) in the outer regions of the LMC in order to shed light on the extended main sequence turn-off (eMSTO) phenomenon observed in high mass clusters. The four clusters have ages between 1-2Gyr and two of them appear to host eMTSOs. The discovery of eMSTOs in such low mass clusters - more than 5 times less massive than the eMSTO clusters previously studied - suggests that mass is not the controlling factor in whether clusters host eMSTOs. Additionally, the narrow extent of the eMSTO in the two older clusters (~2Gyr) is in agreement with predictions of the stellar rotation scenario, as lower mass stars are expected to be magnetically braked, meaning that their colour magnitude diagrams should be better reproduced by canonical simple stellar populations. We also performed a structural analysis on all the clusters and found that a large core radius is not a requisite for a cluster to exhibit an eMSTO.

- The EPOCH (EROS-2 periodic variable star classification using machine learning) project aims to detect periodic variable stars in the EROS-2 light curve database. In order to classify these variables, we first build a training set by compiling known variables in the Large Magellanic Could area from the OGLE and MACHO surveys. We crossmatch these variables with the EROS-2 sources and extract 22 variability features from 28,392 light curves of the corresponding EROS-2 sources. We then use Random Forests to classify the EROS-2 sources in the training set. We design the model to separate not only Delta Scuti stars, RR Lyraes, Cepheids, eclipsing binaries and long-period variables, the "superclasses", but also their subclasses, such as RRab, RRc, RRd and RRe for RR Lyraes, and similarly for the other variable types. We apply the trained model to the entire EROS-2 LMC database containing about 29 million sources and find 117,234 periodic variable candidates. Out of these 117,234 periodic variables, 55,285 have not been discovered by either OGLE or MACHO variability studies. This set comprises 1906 Delta Scuti stars, 6,607 RR Lyraes, 638 Cepheids, 178 Type II Cepheids, 34,562 eclipsing binaries and 11,394 long-period variables.

- Red supergiants (RSGs) are evolved massive stars that represent extremes, in both their physical sizes and their cool temperatures, of the massive star population. The effective temperature (T_eff_) is the most critical physical property needed to place an RSG on the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, due to the stars' cool temperatures and resulting large bolometric corrections. Several recent papers have examined the potential utility of atomic line equivalent widths (EWs) in cool supergiant (CSG) spectra for determining T_eff_ and other physical properties and found strong correlations between Ti I and Fe I spectral features and T_eff_ in earlier-type CSGs (G and early K) but poor correlations in M-type stars, a spectral subtype that makes up a significant fraction of RSGs. We have extended this work by measuring the EWs of Ti, Fe, and Ca lines in late K- and M-type RSGs in the Milky Way, Large Magellanic Cloud, and Small Magellanic Cloud, and compared these results to the predictions of the theoretical stellar LTE atmosphere models (MARCS) stellar atmosphere models. Our analyses show a poor correlation between T_eff_ and the Fe I and Ti I lines in our observations (at odds with strong correlations predicted by stellar atmosphere models), but do find statistically significant correlations between T_eff_ and the Ca II triplet (CaT) features of Milky Way RSGs, suggesting that this could be a potential diagnostic tool for determining T_eff_ in M-type supergiants. We also examine correlations between these spectral features and other physical properties of RSGs (including metallicity, surface gravity, and bolometric magnitude), and consider the underlying physics driving the evolution of atomic line spectra in RSGs.

- We present the results of a systematic search of Beat Cepheids (BC) in the Magellanic Clouds from the EROS-2 database. Observations were carried out on the MARLY telescope (ESO La Silla, Chile) between July 1996 and March 2003. A specific pipeline was developed to extract periodic light curves from the photometric data obtained with the PEIDA package (Ansari, 1996VA.....40..519A). Two different populations are identified in each Cloud: the BCs pulsating on the fundamental and first overtone modes (FO/F objects) simultaneously, and those pulsating on the first and second overtones (SO/FO objects). A Fourier analysis was performed on each light curve. We derived lower, higher and mean values of metallicities for the FO/F objects, using linear nonadiabatic convective stellar models.

- The EROS-2 survey has produced a database of millions of time series from stars monitored for more than six years, allowing us to classify some of their sources into different variable star types. Among the so-called, long period variables (LPVs), which are known to follow particular sequences in the period-luminosity diagram, we find long secondary period variables whose variability origin remains a matter of debate. We analyze data for the 856864 variable stars that have been discovered in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) that are present in the EROS-2 database, to detect, classify, and characterize LPVs.

- We present CCD phase-binned light curves at 490nm for 97 Cepheid variable stars in the bar of the LMC. The photometry was obtained as part of the French EROS project and has excellent phase coverage, permitting accurate decomposition into Fourier components. We identify as `sinusoidal' or s-Cepheids those stars with periods less than 5.5d and small second-harmonic components. These stars comprise ~30% of our sample and most form a sequence ~1mag brighter than the LMC classical Cepheids in the period-luminosity diagram. They are also generally bluer and have lower-amplitude light curves. We infer that the s-Cepheids are first-overtone pulsators because, when their periods are converted to expected fundamental-mode values, they obey a common period-luminosity-colour relation with classical Cepheids. This also confirms the reality of the colour term in the Cepheid period-luminosity-colour relation. Further, the blue edge of the classical Cepheid instability strip agrees well with the theoretical calculations for the fundamental mode made by Chiosi et al. 1993 (=1993ApJS...86..541C) for the Hertzsprung-Russell and period-luminosity diagrams, but we find that our observed s-Cepheids are >0.2mag brighter and bluer than the Chiosi et al. predictions for the first-overtone. We identify a number of features in plots of our stars' Fourier-component amplitude ratios and phase differences. These features have been identified with resonances between different pulsation modes. In the LMC we find these features seem to occur at periods very similar to Galactic ones for classical Cepheids, but at different periods for s-Cepheids. We discover a double-mode Cepheid in the LMC, for which P(first overtone)/P(fundamental)=0.710+/-0.001, very similar to observed ratios for Galactic double-mode Cepheids.

- We present the most extensive and detailed reddening maps of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) derived from the color properties of Red Clump (RC) stars. The analysis is based on the deep photometric maps from the fourth phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-IV), covering approximately 670deg^2^ of the sky in the Magellanic System region. The resulting maps provide reddening information for 180deg^2^ in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 75deg^2^ in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), with a resolution of 1.7'x1.7' in the central parts of the MCs, decreasing to approximately 27'x27' in the outskirts. The mean reddening is E(V-I)=0.100+/-0.043mag in the LMC and E(V-I)=0.047+/-0.025mag in the SMC. We refine methods of calculating the RC color to obtain the highest possible accuracy of reddening maps based on RC stars. Using spectroscopy of red giants, we find the metallicity gradient in both MCs, which causes a slight decrease of the intrinsic RC color with distance from the galaxy center of ~0.002mag/deg in the LMC and between 0.003 and 0.009mag/deg in the SMC. The central values of the intrinsic RC color are 0.886 and 0.877mag in the LMC and SMC, respectively.
