The tight correlations between supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass (MBH) and the properties of the host galaxy have useful implications for our understanding of the growth of SMBHs and of the evolution of galaxies. Here, we present newly observed correlations between MBH and the host galaxy total UV-[3.6] color (C_UV,tot_, Pearson's r=0.6-0.7) for a sample of 67 galaxies (20 early-type galaxies and 47 late-type galaxies) with directly measured MBH in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer/S4G survey. The colors are carefully measured in a homogeneous manner using the far-UV, near-UV, and 3.6{mu}m magnitudes of the galaxies and their multicomponent structural decompositions in the literature. We find that more massive SMBHs are hosted by (early- and late-type) galaxies with redder colors, but the M_BH_-C_UV,tot_ relations for the two morphological types have slopes that differ at ~2{sigma} level. Early-type galaxies define a red sequence in the M_BH_-C_UV,tot_ diagrams, while late-type galaxies trace a blue sequence. Within the assumption that the specific star formation rate of a galaxy (sSFR) is well traced by L_UV_/L_3.6_, it follows that the SMBH masses for late-type galaxies exhibit a steeper dependence on sSFR than those for early-type galaxies. The M_BH_-C_UV,tot_ and M_BH_-L_3.6,tot_ relations for the sample galaxies reveal a comparable level of vertical scatter in the log MBH direction, approximately 5%-27% more than the vertical scatter of the M_BH_-{sigma} relation. Our M_BH_-C_UV,tot_ relations suggest different channels of SMBH growth for early- and late-type galaxies, consistent with their distinct formation and evolution scenarios. These new relations offer the prospect of estimating SMBH masses reliably using the galaxy color alone. Furthermore, we show that they are capable of estimating intermediate black hole masses in low-mass early- and late-type galaxies.

We present a systematic study of the orbital inclination effects on black hole transients fast time-variability properties. We have considered all the black hole binaries that have been densely monitored by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite. We find that the amplitude of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) depends on the orbital inclination. Type-C QPOs are stronger for nearly edge-on systems (high inclination), while type-B QPOs are stronger when the accretion disc is closer to face-on (low inclination). Our results also suggest that the noise associated with type-C QPOs is consistent with being stronger for low-inclination sources, while the noise associated with type-B QPOs seems inclination independent. These results are consistent with a geometric origin of the type-C QPOs - for instance arising from relativistic precession of the inner flow within a truncated disc - while the noise would correspond to intrinsic brightness variability from mass accretion rate fluctuations in the accretion flow. The opposite behaviour of type-B QPOs - stronger in low-inclinations sources - supports the hypothesis that type-B QPOs are related to the jet, the power of which is the most obvious measurable parameter expected to be stronger in nearly face-on sources.

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are believed to be powered by the accretion of matter onto low-mass black holes (BHs) in spiral host galaxies with BH masses M_BH_~10^6^-10^8^M_{sun}_. However, the broadband spectral energy distribution of the {gamma}-ray-emitting NLS1s are found to be similar to flat-spectrum radio quasars. This challenges our current notion of NLS1s having low M_BH_. To resolve this tension of low M_BH_ values in NLS1s, we fitted the observed optical spectrum of a sample of radio-loud NLS1s (RL-NLS1s), radio-quiet NLS1s (RQ-NLS1s), and radio-quiet broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (RQ-BLS1s) of ~500 each with the standard Shakura-Sunyaev accretion disk (AD) model. For RL-NLS1s we found a mean log(M_BH_^AD^/M_{sun}_) of 7.98+/-0.54. For RQ-NLS1s and RQ-BLS1s we found mean log(M_BH_^AD^/M_{sun}_) of 8.00+/-0.43 and 7.90+/-0.57, respectively. While the derived M_BH_^AD^ values of RQ-BLS1s are similar to their virial masses, for NLS1s the derived M_BH_^AD^ values are about an order of magnitude larger than their virial estimates. Our analysis thus indicates that NLS1s have M_BH_ similar to RQ-BLS1s and their available virial M_BH_ values are underestimated, influenced by their observed relatively small emission line widths. Considering Eddington ratio as an estimation of the accretion rate and using M_BH_^AD^, we found the mean accretion rate of our RQ-NLS1s, RL-NLS1s, and RQ-BLS1s as 0.06_-0.05_^+0.16^, 0.05_-0.04_^+0.18^ and 0.05_-0.04_^+0.15^, respectively. Our results therefore suggest that NLS1s have BH masses and accretion rates that are similar to BLS1s.

We present a multiwavelength study of the active galactic nucleus in the nearby (D=14.1Mpc) low-mass galaxy IC750, which has circumnuclear 22GHz water maser emission. The masers trace a nearly edge-on, warped disk ~0.2pc in diameter, coincident with the compact nuclear X-ray source that lies at the base of the ~kiloparsec-scale extended X-ray emission. The position-velocity structure of the maser emission indicates that the central black hole (BH) has a mass less than 1.4x105M{sun}. Keplerian rotation curves fitted to these data yield enclosed masses between 4.1x104M{sun} and 1.4x105M{sun}, with a mode of 7.2x104M{sun}. Fitting the optical spectrum, we measure a nuclear stellar velocity dispersion {sigma }*=110.7_-13.4_^+12.1^km/s. From near-infrared photometry, we fit a bulge mass of (7.3{+/-}2.7)x108M{sun} and a stellar mass of 1.4x1010M{sun}. The mass upper limit of the intermediate-mass BH in IC750 falls roughly two orders of magnitude below the MBH-{sigma}* relation and roughly one order of magnitude below the MBH-MBulge and MBH-M* relations-larger than the relations' intrinsic scatters of 0.58{+/-}0.09dex, 0.69dex, and 0.65{+/-}0.09dex, respectively. These offsets could be due to larger scatter at the low-mass end of these relations. Alternatively, BH growth is intrinsically inefficient in galaxies with low bulge and/or stellar masses, which causes the BHs to be undermassive relative to their hosts, as predicted by some galaxy evolution simulations.

We report initial results from a large Gemini program to observe z>~5.7 quasars with GNIRS near-IR spectroscopy. Our sample includes 50 quasars with simultaneous ~0.85-2.5{mu}m spectra covering the rest-frame ultraviolet and major broad emission lines from Ly{alpha} to MgII. We present spectral measurements for these quasars and compare with their lower redshift counterparts at z=1.5-2.3. We find that when quasar luminosity is matched, there are no significant differences between the rest-UV spectra of z>~5.7 quasars and the low-z comparison sample. High-z quasars have similar continuum and emission line properties and occupy the same region in the black hole mass and luminosity space as the comparison sample, accreting at an average Eddington ratio of ~0.3. There is no evidence for super-Eddington accretion or hypermassive (>10^10^M_{sun}_) black holes within our sample. We find a mild excess of quasars with weak CIV lines relative to the control sample. Our results, corroborating earlier studies but with better statistics, demonstrate that these high-z quasars are already mature systems of accreting supermassive black holes operating with the same physical mechanisms as those at lower redshifts.

The uncharted territory of the high-redshift (z>~3) universe holds the key to understanding the evolution of quasars. In an attempt to identify the most extreme members of the quasar population, that is, blazars, we have carried out a multiwavelength study of a large sample of radio-loud quasars beyond z=3. Our sample consists of nine {gamma}-ray-detected blazars and 133 candidate blazars selected based on the flatness of their soft X-ray spectra (0.3-10keV photon index <~1.75), including 15 with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations. The application of the likelihood profile stacking technique reveals that the high-redshift blazars are faint {gamma}-ray emitters with steep spectra. The high-redshift blazars host massive black holes (<logM_BH,M{odot}_>>9) and luminous accretion disks (<L_disk_>>10^46^erg/s). Their broadband spectral energy distributions are found to be dominated by high-energy radiation, indicating their jets are among the most luminous ones. Focusing on the sources exhibiting resolved X-ray jets (as observed with the Chandra satellite), we find the bulk Lorentz factor to be larger with respect to other z>3 blazars, indicating faster moving jets. We conclude that the presented list of high-redshift blazars may act as a reservoir for follow-up observations, such as with NuSTAR, to understand the evolution of relativistic jets at the dawn of the universe.

In the new era of gravitational wave (GW) and multi-messenger astrophysics, the detection of a GW signal from the coalescence of a black hole - neutron star (BHNS) binary remains a highly anticipated discovery. This kind of system is expected to be within reach of the second generation of ground-based detectors. In this context, we develop a series of versatile semi-analytical models to predict the properties of all the electromagnetic (EM) counterparts of BHNS mergers.We include the nuclear-decay-powered kilonova emission, its radio remnant, the prompt emission from the jet and the related afterglow. The properties of these counterparts depend upon those of the outflows that result from the partial disruption of the NS during the merger and from the accretion disc around the remnant, which are necessary ingredients for transient EM emission to accompany the GW signal. We therefore define ways to relate the properties of these outflows to those of the progenitor binary, establishing a link between the binary parameters and the counterpart properties. From the resulting model, we anticipate the variety of light curves that can emerge after a BHNS coalescence, from the radio up to gamma-rays. These light curves feature universal traits which are the imprint of the dynamics of the emitting outflows, but at the same time they show a clear dependence on the BH mass and spin, though with a high degree of degeneracy. The latter can be deduced by joint GW - EM analysis. In this paper, we perform a proof-of-concept multi-messenger parameter estimation of a BHNS merger with an associated kilonova, to test how the information from the EM counterpart can complement that from the GW signal. Our results indicate that the observation and modeling of the kilonova can help to break the degeneracies in the GW parameter space, leading to better constraints on, e.g., the BH spin.

The tidal disruption of a star by a massive black hole is expected to yield a luminous flare of thermal emission. About two dozen of these stellar tidal disruption flares (TDFs) may have been detected in optical transient surveys. However, explaining the observed properties of these events within the tidal disruption paradigm is not yet possible. This theoretical ambiguity has led some authors to suggest that optical TDFs are due to a different process, such as a nuclear supernova or accretion disk instabilities. Here we present a test of a fundamental prediction of the tidal disruption event scenario: a suppression of the flare rate due to the direct capture of stars by the black hole. Using a recently compiled sample of candidate TDFs with black hole mass measurements, plus a careful treatment of selection effects in this flux-limited sample, we confirm that the dearth of observed TDFs from high-mass black holes is statistically significant. All the TDF impostor models we consider fail to explain the observed mass function; the only scenario that fits the data is a suppression of the rate due to direct captures. We find that this suppression can explain the low volumetric rate of the luminous TDF candidate ASASSN-15lh, thus supporting the hypothesis that this flare belongs to the TDF family. Our work is the first to present the optical TDF luminosity function. A steep power law is required to explain the observed rest-frame g-band luminosity, dN/dL_g_{propto}L_g_^-2.5^. The mean event rate of the flares in our sample is ~1x10^-4^galaxy^-1^/yr, consistent with the theoretically expected tidal disruption rate.

Clusters of galaxies are outstanding laboratories for understanding the physics of supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback. Here we present the first Chandra, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and Hubble Space Telescope analysis of MACS J1447.4+0827 (z=0.3755), one of the strongest cool core clusters known, in which extreme feedback from its central SMBH is needed to prevent the hot intracluster gas from cooling. Using this multiwavelength approach, including 70ks of Chandra X-ray observations, we detect the presence of collimated jetted outflows that coincide with a southern and a northern X-ray cavity. The total mechanical power associated with these outflows (P_cav_~6x1044erg/s) is roughly consistent with the energy required to prevent catastrophic cooling of the hot intracluster gas (L_cool_=1.71{+/-}0.01x1045erg/s for t_cool_=7.7Gyr), implying that powerful SMBH feedback was in place several Gyr ago in MACS J1447.7+0827. In addition, we detect the presence of a radio minihalo that extends over 300kpc in diameter (P1.4GHz=3.0{+/-}0.3x1024W/Hz). The X-ray observations also reveal an ~20kpc plumelike structure that coincides with optical dusty filaments that surround the central galaxy. Overall, this study demonstrates that the various physical phenomena occurring in the most nearby clusters of galaxies are also occurring in their more distant analogs.

We present dynamical measurements of the central mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of a sample of 27 low-mass early-type ATLAS^3D^ galaxies. We consider all ATLAS^3D^ galaxies with 9.7<log(M*/M_{sun}_)<10.5 in our analysis, selecting out galaxies with available high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, and eliminating galaxies with significant central color gradients or obvious dust features. We use the HST images to derive mass models for these galaxies and combine these with the central velocity dispersion values from ATLAS^3D^ data to obtain a central dynamical M/L estimate. These central dynamical M/Ls are higher than dynamical M/Ls derived at larger radii and stellar population estimates of the galaxy centers in ~80% of galaxies, with a median enhancement of ~14% and a statistical significance of 3.3{sigma}. We show that the enhancement in the central M/L is best described either by the presence of black holes in these galaxies or by radial initial mass function variations. Assuming a black hole model, we derive black hole masses for the sample of galaxies. In two galaxies, NGC 4458 and NGC 4660, the data suggest significantly overmassive black holes, while in most others only upper limits are obtained. We also show that the level of M/L enhancements we see in these early-type galaxy nuclei are consistent with the larger enhancements seen in ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), supporting the scenario where massive UCDs are created by stripping galaxies of these masses.
