- While it is currently unclear from a theoretical standpoint which forces and processes dominate the formation of high-mass stars, and hence determine the mode in which they form, much of the recent observational evidence suggests that massive stars are born in a similar manner to their low-mass counterparts. This paper aims to investigate the hypothesis that the embedded luminous star AFGL 2591-VLA 3 (2.3E+5L_{sun}_ at 3.33kpc) is forming according to a scaled-up version of a low-mass star formation scenario. We present multi-configuration Very Large Array 3.6cm and 7mm, as well as Combined Array for Research in Millimeter Astronomy C^18^O and 3mm continuum observations to investigate the morphology and kinematics of the ionized gas, dust, and molecular gas around AFGL 2591. We also compare our results to ancillary Gemini North near-IR images, and model the near-IR to sub-mm Spectral Energy distribution (SED) and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) image profiles of AFGL 2591 using a Monte-Carlo dust continuum radiative transfer code. The observed 3.6 cm images uncover for the first time that the central powering source AFGL 2591-VLA 3 has a compact core plus collimated jet morphology, extending 4000AU eastward from the central source with an opening angle of <10{deg} at this radius. However, at 7mm VLA 3 does not show a jet morphology, but instead compact (< 500AU) emission, some of which (<0.57mJy of 2.9mJy) is estimated to be from dust emission. The spectral index of AFGL 2591-VLA 3 between 3.6cm and 7mm was found to be between 0.4 and 0.5, similar to that of an ionized wind. If the 3.6cm emission is modelled as an ionized jet, the jet has almost enough momentum to drive the larger-scale flow. However, assuming a shock efficiency of 10%, the momentum rate of the jet is not sufficient to ionize itself via only shocks, and thus a significant portion of the emission is instead likely created in a photoionized wind. The C18O emission uncovers dense entrained material in the outflow(s) from these young stars. The main features of the SED and 2MASS images of AFGL 2591-VLA 3 are also reproduced by our model dust geometry of a rotationally flattened envelope with and without a disk. The above results are consistent with a picture of massive star formation similar to that seen for low-mass protostars. However, within its envelope, AFGL 2591-VLA 3 contains at least four other young stars, constituting a small cluster. Therefore it appears that AFGL 2591-VLA 3 may be able to source its accreting material from a shared gas reservoir while still exhibiting the phenomena expected during the formation of low-mass stars.

- We study the properties of massive, galactic-scale outflows of molecular gas and investigate their impact on galaxy evolution. We present new IRAM PdBI CO(1-0) observations of local ULIRGs and QSO hosts: clear signature of massive and energetic molecular outflows, extending on kpc scales, is found in the CO(1-0) kinematics of four out of seven sources, with measured outflow rates of several 100M_{sun}_/yr. We combine these new observations with data from the literature, and explore the nature and origin of massive molecular outflows within an extended sample of 19 local galaxies.

- We present the final data release of the APEX low-redshift legacy survey for molecular gas (ALLSMOG), comprising CO(2-1) emission line observations of 88 nearby, low-mass (10^8.5^<M_*_[M_{sun}_]<10^10^) star-forming galaxies carried out with the 230GHz APEX-1 receiver on the APEX telescope. The main goal of ALLSMOG is to probe the molecular gas content of more typical and lower stellar mass galaxies than have been studied by previous CO surveys. We also present IRAM 30m observations of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission lines in nine galaxies aimed at increasing the M_*_<10^9^M_{sun}_ sample size.In this paper we describe the observations, data reduction and analysis methods and we present the final CO spectra together with archival HI 21cm line observations for the entire sample of 97 galaxies. At the sensitivity limit of ALLSMOG, we register a total CO detection rate of 47%. Galaxies with higher M_*_, SFR, nebular extinction (A_V_), gas-phase metallicity (O/H), and HI gas mass have systematically higher CO detection rates.In particular, the parameter according to which CO detections and non-detections show the strongest statistical differences is the gas-phase metallicity, for any of the five metallicity calibrations examined in this work. We investigate scaling relations between the CO(1-0) line luminosity (L'_CO(1-0)_) and galaxy-averaged properties using ALLSMOG and a sub-sample of COLD GASS for a total of 185 sources that probe the local main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies and its +/-0.3dex intrinsic scatter from M_*_=10^8.5^M_{sun}_ to M_*_=10^11^M_{sun}_. L'_CO(1-0)_ is most strongly correlated with the SFR, but the correlation with M_*_ is closer to linear and almost comparably tight. The relation between L'_CO(1-0)_ and metallicity is the steepest one, although deeper CO observations of galaxies with A_V_<0.5mag may reveal an as much steep correlation with A_V_. Our results suggest that star-forming galaxies across more than two orders of magnitude in M_*_ obey similar scaling relations between CO luminosity and the galaxy properties examined in this work. Besides SFR, the CO luminosity is likely most fundamentally linked to M_*_, although we note that stellar mass alone cannot explain all of the variation in CO emission observed as a function of O/H and M_HI_.

- The nearby system 4C12.50, also known as IRAS 13451+1217 and PKS 1345+12, is a merger of gas-rich galaxies with infrared and radio activity. It has a perturbed interstellar medium (ISM) and a dense configuration of gas and dust around the nucleus. The radio emission at small (~100pc) and large (~100kpc) scales, as well as the large X-ray cavity in which the system is embedded, are indicative of a jet that could have affected the ISM. We carried out observations of the CO(1-0), (3-2), and (4-3) lines with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) to determine basic properties (i.e., extent, mass, and excitation) of the cold molecular gas in this system, including its already-known wind. The CO emission reveals the presence of gaseous streams related to the merger, which result in a small (4kpc-wide) disk around the western nucleus. The disk reaches a rotational velocity of 200km/s, and has a mass of 3.8(+/-0.4)10^9^M_{sun}_. It is truncated at a gaseous ridge north of the nucleus that is bright in [OIII]. Regions with high-velocity CO emission are seen at signal-to-noise ratios of between 3 and 5 along filaments that radially extend from the nucleus to the ridge and that are bright in [O iii] and stellar emission. A tentative wind detection is also reported in the nucleus and in the disk. The molecular gas speed could be as high as 2200km/s and the total wind mass could be as high as 1.5(+/-0.1)10^9^M_{sun}_. Energetically, it is possible that the jet, assisted by the radiation pressure of the active nucleus or the stars, accelerated clouds inside an expanding bubble.

- A new analysis of high-resolution data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array for five luminous or ultraluminous infrared galaxies gives a slope for the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation equal to 1.74_-0.07_^+0.09^ for gas surface densities {Sigma}_mol_>10^3^M_{sun}_/pc^2^ and an assumed constant CO-to-H2 conversion factor. The velocity dispersion of the CO line, {sigma}_v_, scales approximately as the inverse square root of {Sigma}_mol_, making the empirical gas scale height determined from H~0.5{sigma}^2^/({pi}G{Sigma}_mol_) nearly constant, 150-190pc, over 1.5 orders of magnitude in {Sigma}_mol_. This constancy of H implies that the average midplane density, which is presumably dominated by CO-emitting gas for these extreme star-forming galaxies, scales linearly with the gas surface density, which in turn implies that the gas dynamical rate (the inverse of the freefall time) varies with {Sigma}_mol_^1/2^, thereby explaining most of the super-linear slope in the KS relation. Consistent with these relations, we also find that the mean efficiency of star formation per freefall time is roughly constant, 5%-7%, and the gas depletion time decreases at high {Sigma}_mol_, reaching only ~16Myr at {Sigma}_mol_~10^4^M_{sun}_/pc^2^. The variation of {sigma}_v_ with {Sigma}_mol_ and the constancy of H are in tension with some feedback-driven models, which predict {sigma}_v_ to be more constant and H to be more variable. However, these results are consistent with simulations in which large-scale gravity drives turbulence through a feedback process that maintains an approximately constant Toomre Q instability parameter.

- Our goal is to characterize the intermediate age, detached shell carbon star U Antliae morphologically and physically in order to study the mass-loss evolution after a possible thermal pulse. High spatial resolution ALMA observations of unprecedented quality in thermal CO lines allow us to derive first critical spatial and temporal scales and constrain modeling effects to estimate mass-loss rates for both the present day as well as the ejection period of the detached shell. The detached shell is remarkably thin, overall spherically symmetric, and shows a barely resolved filamentary substructure possibly caused by instabilities in the interaction zone of winds with different outflow velocities. The expansion age of the detached shell is of the order of 2700 years and its overall width indicates a high expansion-velocity and high mass-loss period of only a few hundred years at an average mass-loss rate of ~10^-5^M_{sun}_/yr. The post-high-mass-loss-rate-epoch evolution of U Ant shows a significant decline to a substantially lower gas expansion velocity and a mass-loss rate amounting to 4x10^-8^M_{sun}_/yr, at present being consistent with evolutionary changes as predicted for the period between thermal pulses.

- The FU Orionis-type objects (FUors) are low-mass pre-main-sequence stars undergoing a temporary but significant increase of mass accretion rate from the circumstellar disk onto the protostar. It is not yet clear what triggers the accretion bursts and whether the disks of FUors are in any way different from the disks of nonbursting young stellar objects. Motivated by this, we conducted a 1.3mm continuum survey of 10 FUors and FUor-like objects with ALMA, using both the 7m array and the 12m array in two different configurations to recover emission at the widest possible range of spatial scales. We detected all targeted sources and several nearby objects as well. To constrain the disk structure, we fit the data with models of increasing complexity from 2D Gaussian to radiative transfer, enabling comparison with other samples modeled in a similar way. The radiative transfer modeling gives disk masses that are significantly larger than what is obtained from the measured millimeter fluxes assuming optically thin emission, suggesting that the FUor disks are optically thick at this wavelength. In comparison with samples of regular class II and class I objects, the disks of FUors are typically a factor of 2.9-4.4 more massive and a factor of 1.5-4.7 smaller in size. A significant fraction of them (65%-70%) may be gravitationally unstable.

- We present new ^12^CO (J=1-0) observations of He 2-10, a blue compact dwarf galaxy about 8.7Mpc away, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. These are the highest spatial and spectral resolution observations, to date, of the molecular gas in this starburst galaxy. We measure a molecular mass of (1.2+/-0.4)x10^8^M_{sun}_ in He 2-10, and 75% of the molecular gas mass is contained within the northern region of the galaxy near the previously identified young super star clusters, which has a projected size of about 300pc. We use the CPROPS algorithm to identify 119 resolved giant molecular clouds distributed throughout the galaxy, and the molecular gas contained within these clouds makes up between 45% and 70% of the total molecular mass. The molecular clouds in He 2-10 have similar median sizes (~26pc), luminous masses (~4x10^5^M_{sun}_), and surface densities (~180M_{sun}_/pc^2^) to Milky Way clouds. However, He 2-10 clouds have velocity dispersions (~3km/s) about 50% higher than those in the Milky Way. We provide evidence that He 2-10 clouds tend to be in virial equilibrium, with the virial and luminous masses scaling according to M_vir_{propto}M_lum_^1.2+/-0.1^, similar to clouds in the Milky Way. However, we measure a scaling relationship between luminous mass and size, M_lum_{propto}R^3.0+/-0.3^, that is steeper than what is observed in Milky Way clouds. Assuming that He 2-10 molecular clouds are virialized, we infer values of the CO-to-H_2_ conversion factor ranging from 0.5 to 13 times the standard value in the solar neighborhood. Given star formation efficiencies as low as 5%, the most massive molecular clouds in He 2-10 currently have enough mass to form the next generation of super star clusters in the galaxy.

- We use the results from the ALMA large program ASPECS, the spectroscopic survey in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), to constrain CO luminosity functions of galaxies and the resulting redshift evolution of {rho}(H_2_). The broad frequency range covered enables us to identify CO emission lines of different rotational transitions in the HUDF at z>1. We find strong evidence that the CO luminosity function evolves with redshift, with the knee of the CO luminosity function decreasing in luminosity by an order of magnitude from ~2 to the local universe. Based on Schechter fits, we estimate that our observations recover the majority (up to ~90%, depending on the assumptions on the faint end) of the total cosmic CO luminosity at z=1.0-3.1. After correcting for CO excitation, and adopting a Galactic CO-to-H_2_ conversion factor, we constrain the evolution of the cosmic molecular gas density {rho}(H_2_): this cosmic gas density peaks at z~1.5 and drops by a factor of 6.5_-1.4_^+1.8^ to the value measured locally. The observed evolution in {rho}(H_2_), therefore, closely matches the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate density {rho}SFR. We verify the robustness of our result with respect to assumptions on source inclusion and/or CO excitation. As the cosmic star formation history can be expressed as the product of the star formation efficiency and the cosmic density of molecular gas, the similar evolution of {rho}(H_2_) and {rho}SFR leaves only little room for a significant evolution of the average star formation efficiency in galaxies since z~3 (85% of cosmic history).

- We present Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-Millimeter Array (ALMA) Band 6 observations of a complete sample of protoplanetary disks in the young (~1-3Myr) Lupus star-forming region, covering the 1.33mm continuum and the ^12^CO, ^13^CO, and C^18^O J=2-1 lines. The spatial resolution is ~0.25" with a medium 3{sigma} continuum sensitivity of 0.30mJy, corresponding to Mdust ~0.2M_{Earth}_. We apply Keplerian masking to enhance the signal-to-noise ratios of our ^12^CO zero-moment maps, enabling measurements of gas disk radii for 22 Lupus disks; we find that gas disks are universally larger than millimeter dust disks by a factor of two on average, likely due to a combination of the optically thick gas emission and the growth and inward drift of the dust. Using the gas disk radii, we calculate the dimensionless viscosity parameter, {alpha}_visc_, finding a broad distribution and no correlations with other disk or stellar parameters, suggesting that viscous processes have not yet established quasi-steady states in Lupus disks. By combining our 1.33mm continuum fluxes with our previous 890{mu}m continuum observations, we also calculate the millimeter spectral index, {alpha}_mm_, for 70 Lupus disks; we find an anticorrelation between {alpha}_mm_ and millimeter flux for low-mass disks (M_dust_<~5), followed by a flattening as disks approach {alpha}_mm_~2, which could indicate faster grain growth in higher-mass disks, but may also reflect their larger optically thick components. In sum, this work demonstrates the continuous stream of new insights into disk evolution and planet formation that can be gleaned from unbiased ALMA disk surveys.
