- We report results of a time series analysis of high-resolution K-band imaging, photometry, and polarimetry of stars in the Galactic center cluster covering 7 consecutive years. In our statistical sample with m_K_<13, about half of the stars show indication of variability consistent with most of them being long-period variable, asymptotic giant branch stars. Some long-period variables already proposed in the literature are confirmed. They are identified with asymptotic giant branch stars. For the first time we show that the bright He I source IRS 16SW is a short-period variable with a period of ~9.72 days. It is most likely an eclipsing binary with a lower mass limit of >=100M_{sun}_. This confirms previous modeling of characteristics of the near-infrared spectra, which also indicated that IRS 16SW is a massive, young hot star. We also present the results of a polarization survey covering the central parsec of the Galaxy. Stars whose polarization vectors differ from the overall polarization, which is parallel to the Galactic plane, are mostly situated in the "minispiral", a region of high thermal flux density at centimeter radio wavelengths. Some of these sources appear extended in the high-resolution images and have featureless red spectra. We interpret these objects as young stars that may have just recently been formed and are still embedded in a dust shell.

- Optical and infrared continuum polarization from the interstellar medium is driven by radiative processes aligning the grains with the magnetic field. While a quantitative, predictive theory of radiative alignment torques (RATs) exists and has been extensively tested, several parameters of the theory remain to be fully constrained. In a recent paper, Medan & Andersson showed that the polarization efficiency (and therefore grain alignment efficiency) at different locations in the wall of the Local Bubble (LB) could be modeled as proportional to the integrated light intensity from the surrounding stars and OB associations. Here we probe that relationship at high radiation field intensities by studying the extinction and polarization in the two reflection nebulae IC59 and IC63 in the Sh2-185 HII region, illuminated by the B0 IV star {gamma}Cassiopeia. We combine archival visual polarimetry with new seven-band photometry in the Vilnius system, to derive the polarization efficiency from the material. We find that the same linear relationship seen in the LB wall also applies to the Sh2-185 region, strengthening the conclusion from the earlier study.

- Reconnection heating has been considered as a potential source of the heating of the interstellar medium. In some galaxies, significant polarised radio emission has been found between the spiral arms. This emission has a form of 'magnetic arms' that resembles the spiral structure of the galaxy. Reconnection effects could convert some of the energy of the turbulent magnetic field into the thermal energy of the surrounding medium, leaving more ordered magnetic fields, as is observed in the magnetic arms. Sensitive radio and X-ray data for the grand-design spiral galaxy M 83 are used for a detailed analysis of the possible interactions of magnetic fields with hot gas, including a search for signatures of gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects. Magnetic field strengths and energies derived from the radio emission are compared with the parameters of the hot gas calculated from the model fits to sensitive X-ray spectra of the hot gas emission. The available X-ray data allowed us to distinguish two thermal components in the halo of M 83. We found slightly higher average temperatures of the hot gas in the interarm regions, which results in higher energies per particle and is accompanied by a decrease in the energy density of the magnetic fields. The observed differences in the energy budget between the spiral arms and the interarm regions suggest that, similar to the case of another spiral galaxy NGC 6946, we may be observing hints for gas heating by magnetic reconnection effects in the interarm regions. These effects, which act more efficiently on the turbulent component of the magnetic field, are expected to be stronger in the spiral arms. However, with the present data it is only possible to trace them in the interarm regions, where the star formation and the resulting turbulence is low.

- We present flux densities and polarization percentages of 159 radio galaxies based on nearly simultaneous Very Large Array observations at four frequencies, 4.86, 8.46, 22.46, and 43.34GHz. This sample is selected from the high-frequency Australia Telescope 20GHz (AT20G) survey and consists of all sources with flux density S_20GHz_>40mJy in an equatorial field of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) survey. For a subset of 25 of these sources, we used the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to obtain 90GHz data. We find that, as expected, this sample consists of flatter spectrum and more compact or point-like sources than low-frequency-selected samples. In the K band, variability is typically <~20%, although there are exceptions. The higher frequency data are well suited to the detection of extreme gigahertz peak spectrum sources. The inclusion of the 43GHz data causes the relative fraction of inverted spectrum sources to go down and of peaked spectrum sources to go up when compared with the AT20G survey results. The trend largely continues with the inclusion of the 90GHz data, although ~10% of the sources with GBT data show a spectral upturn from 43GHz to 90GHz. The measured polarization fractions are typically <5%, although in some cases they are measured to be up to ~20%. For sources with detected polarized flux in all four bands, about 40% of the sample, the polarization fractions typically increase with frequency. This trend is stronger for steeper spectrum sources as well as for the lower flux density sources.

- Maps of 212 extragalactic radio sources at 4.9 GHz are shown in Stokes I along with linear polarization vectors. The objects have a declination range of 0 degrees to -35 degrees and were chosen from the Hewitt & Burbidge quasar catalog with a spectral index less than -0.5 and the NVSS survey with a minimum 1.4 GHz flux density greater than 300 mJy. The observations were made with the Very Large Array in its B configuration, and the images have a typical resolution of 2 arcseconds. One hundred ninety-five objects were resolved; 108 of the sources are quasars, and another 51 have been identified as galaxies.

- We have determined 194 Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of polarized extragalactic radio sources using new, multi-channel polarization observations at frequencies around 1.4GHz from the Very Large Array in the Galactic plane at 17{deg}<=l<=63{deg} and 205{deg}<=l<=253{deg}. This catalog fills in gaps in the RM coverage of the Galactic plane between the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS; Taylor et al. 2003, Cat. VI/128; Brown et al. 2003, Cat. J/ApJS/145/213) and Southern Galactic Plane Survey (SGPS; Haverkorn et al. 2006ApJS..167..230H; Brown et al. 2007, Cat. J/ApJ/663/258).

- We present the first results of the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey (VIPS), a 5GHz VLBI survey of 1119 sources with flat radio spectra. Through automated data reduction and imaging routines, we have produced publicly available I, Q, and U images and have detected polarized flux density from 37% of the sources. We have also developed an algorithm to use each source's I image to automatically classify it as a pointlike source, a core jet, a compact symmetric object (CSO) candidate, or a complex source. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we have found no significant trend between optical flux and 5 GHz flux density for any of the source categories.

- SiO maser emission occurs in the extended atmosphere of evolved stars and can be studied at high angular resolution. As compact, high-brightness components they can be used as important tracers of the dynamics at distances close to the central star. The masers also serve as probes of the evolutionary path from spherically symmetric AGB stars to aspherical PNe. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of Mira variables indicate that SiO masers are significantly linearly polarized with linear polarization fractions up to 100%. However, no information is available at high angular resolution for SiO masers in higher mass loss OH/IR stars. Theory indicates a different SiO pumping mechanism in higher mass loss evolved stars. We extend the VLBI SiO maser studies to OH/IR stars. The observations enable us to understand the SiO pumping mechanisms in higher mass-loss evolved objects and to compare them with Mira variables. Additionally, polarimetric observations of SiO masers help us to understand the magnetic field strength and morphology and to distinguish between conflicting polarization theories.

- We present Very Long Baseline Array observations and a statistical analysis of 5GHz VLBI polarimetry data from 177 sources in the Caltech-Jodrell Bank Flat-Spectrum (CJF) survey. The CJF survey, a complete, flux density-limited sample of 293 extragalactic radio sources, gives us the unique opportunity to compare a broad range of source properties for quasars, galaxies, and BL Lacertae objects. We focus primarily on jet properties, specifically, the correlation between the jet axis angle and the polarization angle in the core and jet. A strong correlation is found for the electric vector polarization angle in the cores of quasars to be perpendicular to the jet axis. Contrary to previous claims, no correlation is found between the jet polarization angle and the jet axis in either quasars or BL Lac objects. With this large, homogeneous sample we are also able to investigate cosmological issues and active galactic nucleus evolution.
